ARP Books (www.arpbooks.org), a Winnipeg-based publishing house with a 20-year history of producing award-winning books focusing on progressive political analysis of contemporary issues and culture, is hiring an Executive Editor. This new position will be responsible for overseeing our publishing program, including the day-to-day operations as well as the overall strategic direction of the publishing house. This is a rare opportunity for a dynamic applicant; the Executive Editor will be given the mandate and the support to build on ARP’s strong foundation and expand our operations.

  • Oversee the publishing operations at ARP Books as the senior staff person;
  • Lead the development and implementation of a long-term strategic plan and increase the number of books published each year;
  • Actively seek out new manuscripts and authors for upcoming seasons;
  • Manage sales, distribution, and inventory and be responsible for our publishing program, operating budget, and grant applications and reporting.
  • Communicate directly with authors, participate in professional organizations, and provide leadership on marketing and publicity matters.

The Executive Editor will report directly to the ARP Books editorial board and will manage two part-time staff people.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will: have at least five years experience in Canadian publishing (or equivalent), with knowledge of both the editorial and business sides of publishing; have a keen understanding of the publishing landscape and a vision for ARP’s place in it; demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills; be able to work accurately and effectively under pressure of frequent deadlines and conflicting demands; and be exceptionally organized. We are looking for a leader who is also able to work as a member of a team that incudes talented staff and a volunteer board. Applicants should provide evidence of supervising a team or project and/or demonstration of leadership skills and managerial experience.

Salary Range

Competitive and commensurate with experience.
