Alcuin Book Design Awards Ceremony & Panel on Graphic Storytelling

The award ceremony for the 34th Alcuin Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada will take place September 22 in Vancouver, with tickets open to the public. The event is co-sponsored by the Alcuin Society and Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Registration is free at Eventbrite.

Place: Emily Carr University of Art + Design Auditorium – Room 301 South Building, 1400 Johnston Street (Granville Island) – Vancouver

Panel Info

As well as the award presentation, the Society will present a panel on Graphic Storytelling. This will be moderated by Robin McConnell, host of the Inkstuds podcast.

The panelists are:

  • Nick Bantock – author/illustrator of the Griffin and Sabine Trilogy
  • Sarah Leavitt – author/illustrator of the graphic memoir, Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer’s, My Mother, and Me
  • Johnnie Christmas –  author/illustrator of Firebug; illustrator of Margaret Atwood’s graphic novel, Angel Catbird

This year’s Alcuin award winning books will be on display. Copies of the presenters’ books will be available for signing and purchase at the event.

City of Vancouver invites submissions for 2015 Book Award

Authors and publishers of books that contribute to the appreciation and understanding of Vancouver’s history, unique character or the achievements of its residents are invited to submit entries for the annual City of Vancouver Book Award.

Submissions can be of any genre and will demonstrate excellence in content, illustration, design, and/or format. To be eligible, books must be published in 2015 or 2014 and meet the application criteria.

An independent jury will choose the winner of the 2015 City of Vancouver Book Award and the $3,000 prize. The award will be presented in November by Mayor Gregor Robertson at the Mayor’s Arts Awards.

Deadline for entries is Wednesday, May 20, 2015.
