As publishing enters a new era of what might more accurately be titled “transpublishing”, demands for new and different management skills have grown. Publishers are no longer just book or magazine publishers, they are curators of content, publishers of multi-platform, multi-format, and cross-device material. This material is no longer simply words to be consumed by a reader. An author might be commissioned by a gaming company to write an entire book based on audience feedback, BEFORE the game is even designed. A children’s book may be an “app” before it ever, if ever becomes a print book. Reference guides may be written directly for an online/mobile audience.
Where once managers worked within specific parameters and metrics, today they need to be agile and ready to react quickly to new ideas, new strategies and new business models.
