Assistant Editor Wanted for Anthem Press London Office

Anthem Press is seeking to hire a full-time enterprising and passionate Assistant Editor in its London office to support its Social Sciences, Humanities and Business book publishing programme and to play a key role in helping achieve its ambitious growth plans.

Anthem Press is a leading independent academic publisher in established and emerging Social Sciences, Humanities and Business fields of study and has a strong international and interdisciplinary focus.

The Assistant Editor will report directly to the Publishing Director and will:

  • Evaluate proposals and manage assistants to arrange the peer review of project proposals by qualified independent experts;
  • Solicit proposals from scholars (and professionals);
  • Work cooperatively with our team of acquisitions editors and assistants to help achieve annual publishing targets;
  • Assist with contract negotiations for books and book series;
  • Handover contracted projects to editorial assistants once the titles are under contract;
  • Oversee the publishing process for each title;
  • Maintain contact and management databases;
  • Prepare annual qualitative and quantitative assessments of the list along with list profiles and other materials to help market and promote the publishing programme;
  • Perform other duties as needed or required;
  • Must be legally entitled to work in the UK.

Job Requirements

Candidates should have:

  • 2 years of experience in the academic book publishing sector with some commissioning experience;
  • a Bachelor’s degree in the humanities or social sciences;
  • outstanding written and verbal communication and people management skills;
  • proven analytic ability and negotiation skills;
  • knowledge of the higher education community (especially the USA and Europe);
  • the ability to work with academic authors;
  • knowledge of the publishing industry, particularly scholarly publishing;
  • commercial awareness and be detailed-oriented, proactive and dynamic.

UK Office Hours: 9am-5.30pm MondayFriday, with lunch break

Job Type: Full-time / 12-month

Contract Salary: Negotiable depending on skills and experience
