Manager, Publishing Services

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

The International Institute for Sustainable Development is looking for an experienced editor and publisher who is highly motivated, team-focused, and goal-oriented and has a positive attitude to manage its publishing services.

You must have a genuine interest in sustainable development and willing to work flexible hours to accommodate the needs of an organization, which is headquartered in Winnipeg with offices in Geneva, Ottawa and New York.

IISD is looking for someone who would love to collaborate with world-leading thinkers and experts to achieve goals for sustainable development through the production of effective communication products and by strengthening the Institute’s online presence and global reach.

Position Summary:

The Manager, Publishing Services is a member of the communications team responsible for the delivery of communications support services within the organization.

The Manager, Publishing Services is the first point of contact for IISD staff in the publishing of the Institute’s print and electronic products.

In addition, he/she works collaboratively with the communications team in the development of corporate communication products and strengthening the Institute’s online presence.

Qualifications and Attributes

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in one of the Social Sciences such as (Economics, Political Science, Geography, International Development) or Sciences such as (Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology, Natural Resources Management) and diploma in journalism, communications or other related field and more than three years’ experience in publishing. A Master of Publishing (Simon Fraser University) would be an asset.

  • Must have excellent editing and copyediting skills.

  • Must think digital first. Must be familiar with social media (blogs, twitter, among others); must be familiar with open data, open source concepts.

  • Must have the ability to visualize economic, scientific and other data for the production of infographics that help communicate the institute’s public policy research.

  • Must have strong publishing software skills, including a high level of experience with MS Office suite of products—track changes, layouts, markups—including Excel (simple operations with formulas), PowerPoint, Word and design software.

  • Must have a helpful, thoughtful and collaborative personality with a gift for creativity, especially under pressure.

  • Can work virtually and communicate well through email, Skype. etc.

  • English is required; French, Spanish and other languages would be an asset.
